Slutsky matrix norms: The size, classification, and comparative statics of bounded rationality
نویسندگان
چکیده
Given any observed demand behavior by means of a demand function, we quantify by how much it departs from rationality. The measure of the gap is the smallest Frobenius norm of the correcting matrix function that would yield a Slutsky matrix with its standard rationality properties (symmetry, singularity, and negative semidefiniteness). A useful classification of departures from rationality is suggested as a result. Errors in comparative statics predictions from assuming rationality are decomposed as the sum of a behavioral error (due to the agent) and a mis-specification error (due to the modeller). Comparative statics for the boundedly rational consumer is expressed as path dependence of wealth compensations in price-equivalent paths, or as violations of the compensated law of demand. Illustrations are provided using several bounded rationality models. JEL classification numbers: C60, D10.

Comparative Statics of Money-Goods Specifications of the Utility Function
The introduction of real-cash balances into the neoclassical model of the consumer wrecks havoc, in general, on the empirically observable refutable comparative statics properties of the model. We provide the most general solution of this problem to date by deriving a symmetric and negative semidefinite generalized Slutsky matrix that is empirically observable and which contains all other such ...
متن کاملRent Seeking with Bounded Rationality: An Analysis of the All-Pay Auction
The winner-take-all nature of all-pay auctions makes the outcome sensitive to decision errors, which we introduce with a logit formulation. The equilibrium bid distribution is a fixed point: the belief distributions that determine expected payoffs equal the choice distributions determined by expected payoffs. We prove existence, uniqueness, and symmetry properties. In contrast to the Nash equil...
متن کاملA comparative study of fuzzy norms of linear operators on a fuzzy normed linear spaces
In the present paper, we rst modify the concepts of weakly fuzzy boundedness, strongly fuzzy boundedness, fuzzy continuity, strongly fuzzy continuity and weakly fuzzy continuity. Then, we try to nd some relations by making a comparative study of the fuzzy norms of linear operators.
متن کاملA Sparsity-based Model of Bounded Rationality*
This article defines and analyzes a ‘‘sparse max’’ operator, which is a less than fully attentive and rational version of the traditional max operator. The agent builds (as economists do) a simplified model of the world which is sparse, considering only the variables of first-order importance. His stylized model and his resulting choices both derive from constrained optimization. Still, the spa...
متن کاملRational Choice Theory: A Cultural Reconsideration
Economists have heralded the formulation of the expected utility theorem as a universal method of choice under uncertainty. In their seminal paper, Stigler and Becker (Stigler & Becker, 1977) declared that “human behavior can be explained by a generalized calculus of utility-maximizing behavior” (p.76). The universality of the rational choice theory has been widely criticized by psychologists, ...
